Howlings from High Lake, the 4th album, is finished

Hinkson has been itching to create an acoustic record for many years now. In preparing for the acoustic set for September 2011′s CD “One Beside Two” release, it seemed the original material and covers amassed spoke to it being the right time.

In 4 days in November, Hinkson and his dog Bullitt, head up to Juniper, a hike-in eco-cabin at Falcon Trials Resort with a bunch of recording gear, one guitar and recorded “Howling at High Lake“. The concept was fairly simple: Record songs in a complete take with no overdubs live off the floor – basically a live recording to a canine audience of one. The result is 11 songs cut with a live feel inspired by the majestic High Lake in a fall-turning-winter backdrop. Check out the eco-cabins sometime, they are beautiful and the folks there are very supportive of Manitoban music with bands like The Crooked Brothers, The Weakerthans, and others recording/performing at Falcon Trials Resort.

For those who have enjoyed my covers in the past, there’s plenty on here and they represent some of my all time favorite bands/songs and varied taste in music. There’s also one original track from each of my previous albums along with two new originals “Oh, Horizon!” written while recording “One Beside Two” and “Tuesday, the Cabin Says” written and recorded in a couple hours while at the cabin.

It was an amazing experience and a privilege to be surrounded by music and nature for a few days of reprieve. I hope it meets the expectations of those who have been waiting for an acoustic record. Be sure to buy it, as you’ll read below, all money goes to charity.

Howlings from High Lake is my first album available only as a digital download. In keeping with the minimal eco-footprint, the album is only available through the secure site of http://www.scotthinkson.com/merchandise/. The files are 320kbps MP3s with artwork provided in PDF form. All this for the price of….you choose!

That’s right.

You set the price from $0.01 to as high as you want.

For every $100 in sales, I’ll perform a draw from those who have donated and select a name. The person drawn will be contacted by me to identify the charity of their choice and I’ll make a $100 donation on their behalf and they will get the receipt to claim for taxes purposes. Pretty sweet deal for you guys, so give generously as it all goes to a good cause and let everyone you know about it. Just type in the number you want to give in the field displayed as $1.23. Remember to turn off your pop-blocker when you get your link, it may interfere with you downloading it.

ONE BESIDE TWO is Finished

ONE BESIDE TWO is Finished

Hinkson disappeared into the fade in 2009 and 2010 taking a much needed break after his 2nd release, THE TORRENT SESSIONS – the album’s highlighted success was “Contamination Day”, a pounding rocker that earned a spot CTV/NBC’s “The Listener” and Power 97′s “River City Rawks” compilation and #61 out of their Top 97 songs for the 2008 year. “Surrounded” was also featured on Sean Garrity’s top-notch film “Zooey and Adam”.

Scott returns refreshed with a varied sound on 2011′s release ONE BESIDE TWO, his 3rd album balanced with half new material and some older material. The result is a more organic sounding record, highlighting Hinkson’s voice and writing abilities. More mellow and slightly darker than the previous two releases, ONE BESIDE TWO paints landscapes of loss, recovery, and struggle within – all through an overall simplified sound, yet still accented with his ambient, haunting leads, and the moodiness that defines his production style.

Happy Holidays

Happy Holidays

Happy holidays folks. Hard to believe that this time is upon us already. As it relates to the festive theme, I must admit I’ve been naughty. I have been lax on posting “The Torrent Sessions” instrumentals month by month. So, click here to get a zip file of all 8 of them.

Also, Sean Garrity’s new film “Zooey and Adam” which features “Surrounded” has been challenging audiences this fall across Canadian wide film festivals. It looks to be coming to Winnipeg January 29th-Feb 4th at the Cinematheque. Go check it out.

Lastly, I hope to release another record Sept 2010. I just started on it but I’m in love with it already. I hope it turns out the way I want. It will likely be a much simpler affair than the last two albums and will wrap up all the songs I’ve had in the vault that I wanted to release.

Aug Double-Set and Contamination Day

Well, Hinkson’s song “Contamination Day” hit national television this past Thursday, Aug 13th on CTV’s “The Listener”. In addition, Hinkson and band played an 18 song double-set of tunes at the Academy that night filled with TOOL, MUSE, AUDIOSLAVE, and COREY HART covers.

Power 97 has charted “CONTAMINATION DAY” as #61 of the Top 97 songs of 2008. A very nice gesture indeed that saw Hinkson rise as the cream of the Class of 2008 crop. Hinkson appreciates the support Power 97, and stations like her, have given in 2008. Their efforts are not lost on this kid. Here’s a link detailing how other songs settled out for 2008:

Serena’s EP Is Done

Serena’s EP Is Done

Well Folks, Hinkson has finished his work on Serena Postel’s debut EP. You can hear samples on her website (check the “Links” section”). What did he do on it you ask? Well, he produced, recorded, mixed, mastered, and added all additional instrumentation (with exception to John Huver on drums for one track) to her acoustic guitar as well as constructed a bridge or two. Quite a lot of work. Check it out when it will be released at the end of September or so.

Look for a show or two in October sometime, however Hinkson will be switching gears now to work on pre-production and recording the second album, which is already written.
